avast! Virus Cleaner is a utility that will help you to eliminate selected worm infections from your computer. It will fix the registry and startup items to make sure your system will work correctly after disinfection. The worms create additional working files on your hard disk. These files alone are harmless, they are useless and they should not be there. avast! Virus Cleaner detects and eliminates a known worm from your computer. Its temporary files are eliminated as well. The same applies for worm-specific registry entries. Try using the program when you know that your computer has been infected by a known virus/worm (such as MyDoom, Netsky, Beagle, Badtrans, Blaster, BugBear, Ganda, Klez, Elkern, MiMail, Mydoom, Nachi, Nimda, Opas, Parite, Sasser, Scold, Sinowal, Sircam, Sober, Sobig, Swen, Tenga, Yaha, Zafi). The program does all the disinfection automatically and is not meant as an antivirus solution for everyday use. To defend your computer you have to use avast! 4 Home/professional.
avast! Virus Cleaner will scan the operating system memory and if any worm is found, the worm process is terminated. If it is not possible to eliminate the worm process, the worm will be deactivated in memory to stop its spreading. It will scan your local disks and the "startup items". References to worms found in memory or on disk and infected files will be eliminated or fixed. Additional working/temporary files created by the identified worms will be eliminated. When restarting the computer you need to finish the disinfection process, you will be notified and asked whether the restart should be done immediately. It is highly recommended that during the scanning not to start any application and to turn off any (on-access) antivirus coverage before running this program. avast! Virus Cleaner has to access the infected files to be able to identify and eliminate them. The resident coverage might not allow it and the worm could not be eliminated from your computer. You have to activate the resident coverage again after the program has finished the disinfection.
